ABOUT US

THE MISSION

Solar Wind Sherpas advances scientific understanding of the Sun through total solar eclipse expeditions. Some of the most important questions in solar physics can only be answered by going to the path of totality, wherever it falls on Earth, with the right instruments and expertise.

Over thirty years, this conviction has taken the team across six continents, produced decades of peer-reviewed research, and built one of the most comprehensive ground-based observational records of the solar corona in existence.

SHADIA HABBAL

Dr. Shadia Rifai Habbal has spent fifty years at the frontier of solar physics. Born in Syria, she earned her Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Cincinnati in 1977.

She spent over two decades as a Research Physicist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and lectured at Harvard University. Since 2005, she has been Professor and Astronomer at the Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii, and serves as Lead Editor of the Astrophysical Journal.

Her method—deploying portable observatories to total solar eclipses—has defined her career. Twenty expeditions across thirty years have taken her and her teams to six continents, producing decades of peer-reviewed research recognized with a NASA Certificate of Appreciation and an Honorary Doctorate from Brno University of Technology.

She founded Solar Wind Sherpas in 1995 and has led every expedition since.
